DIY Dishwasher Soap

photo (1)Since I have successfully made my own laundry detergent and really do like it, I decided to browse around and see what kind of products people are using to make their own dishwasher soap.  Well, it seems like the majority out there are using the same basic ingredients, so off to the store I went!  Here is what I used:

1     C. Borax

1     C. Washing Soda

1/3 C. Lemi-Shine

1/4 C. Sea Salt

Mix it all up, and put it in an airtight container.  I could hardly wait to start my dishwasher.  I put 2 Tablespoons in the dishwasher and let it do its thing!  I could hardly wait to see the results!  I opened my dishwasher….and DRUM ROLL Please……BOOOOO!  My dishes were clean, however, my glasses were cloudy.

So, I started looking around and came across ‘one good thing by jillee’s site and she said she had the same problem and added some vinegar to the bottom of the dishwasher and some Dawn dish soap and PRESTO!…so I decided to give it a try.

DIY Dishwasher Soap…TAKE 2!  So, once again, I added 2 Tablespoons of the original powder I had made, and then added  1/2 cup white vinegar to the bottom of the dishwasher and a few drops of Dawn dish soap right on top of the powder in the dispenser.  Please be sure that you only add a few drops though, because too much may cause your dishwasher to leak bubbles!  Okay…so here we go again.  I waited about an hour, swung the door open, and to my delight they were sparkling clean and not cloudy at all!

*Please note that results tend to vary based on the type of mineral content in your local water.
